I remember when I first got into product photography - I'd scroll through my Instagram feed and see all of my favorite photographer's post their work. I'd think "Wow, I wish I could take photos like that".
I kept researching videos on YouTube like, "How to take professional looking photos", "Best lighting techniques for product photography", etc.
But, I remember always feeling a little confused, overwhelmed, and overall - lost!
In the beginning, I had a starter camera, no lights (because frankly I thought only professionals use them), and absolutely no experience.
But, I still really wanted to capture product photos like the ones I'd drool over while looking for ideas on Pinterest!
Every time I'd try and take my next photo, I'd almost (always) end up disappointed at the end result..

My photos were kind of dull, not bright or sharp enough, and they didn't have that "wow factor"...
Oh, did I mention I also had no idea how my camera's settings worked? Which come to find out, was a big reason why my photos sucked.
Everything about product photography seemed so complicated and hard to learn because there were so many things to be aware of!
I had a very hard time learning what I know now.. I made so many mistakes.. I felt frustrated most of the time.. and barely had any guidance..
Even though I tried many courses on Udemy and Skillshare, and watched a ton of YouTube videos..
I still felt completely lost.
There was no one to give me real feedback, show me what I was doing wrong, or help me improve—and believe me, I had a lot of questions.
It honestly took me about two years to start feeling even a little confident in my work. There wasn’t a shortcut or a “magic course” that taught me everything I needed. I had to figure out my camera mostly on my own, making plenty of mistakes along the way. Getting the hang of settings was slow—little by little, I finally started to understand how they worked.
Styling my scenes and figuring out what actually looked good? That took a lot of trial and error, too. And editing my photos was a whole other challenge I tackled one day at a time because there was just so much to learn.
